For Brisbane’s quirkiest Australia Day event!
The biggest little race day in the country celebrates 35 years in 2016! The Australia Day Cockroach Races at Story Bridge Hotel has cemented itself on the Brisbane calendar and next year’s festivities are set to be better than ever.
Save the date now for January 26 and start thinking of the best/worst cockroach pun names, for the chance to be forever immortalised in the glorified Hall of Fame.
Tracing its origins to a bet between mates at the pub in 1981, the Cockroach Races have grown into a massive annual party, attracting up to 2,000 punters every year.
Story Bridge Hotel stretches its borders for the event, with the party taking over the side street and carpark across the road, all directly beneath the iconic Bridge.
The fun-filled day features a 14-race schedule including a steeple chase, live music and DJs, great food stalls, merchandise and giveaways, the ‘Miss Cocky’ competition and more, as well as a fantastic atmosphere with a buzzing crowd.
Once again entry to the Cockroach Races will be just a gold coin, which is donated to charity. Guests can also ‘purchase’ a roach after sizing up the most elite thoroughbred and enter it in a race for their shot at victory.
Plans are currently being put in place for the 35th annual Cockroach Races, so lock in the date now and get your mates on board. (Start organising a costume theme with your entourage, too, for the chance to win ‘Best Dressed Stable’ and a huge prize from Story Bridge Hotel!)
